Free-agent guard Patrick McCaw plans to sign a deal with the Raptors after being released by the Cavaliers earlier this week, according to ESPN.

The Raptors are committing much less money than that, securing McCaw to a one-year veteran's league-minimum deal worth $786,000.

In the midst of their worst season since 2010-2011, the Cavs chose to take a low-risk, decent-reward chance on McCaw, giving him an offer sheet worth $6 million over two years, but non-guaranteed.

Following this, Golden State has requested that the National Basketball Association formally investigate the circumstances surrounding McCaw's contract.

McCaw began the season as an unsigned, restricted free agent with the Warriors. That offer never came, but his wishes did not change, as he rejected Golden State's qualifying offer and a reported offer of two years and $5.2 million. Matching the McCaw offer sheet would've elevated the Warriors luxury tax bill $11.3 million to $61.6 million.

McCaw averaged 4.9 FanDuel points in 17.7 minutes over three games for the Cavaliers. He cleared waivers and became an unrestricted free agent.

He reportedly reached a deal with the Eastern Conference-contending Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. Initial reports when McCaw was waived said the Cavs hoped to bring him back on a differently structured deal, but there had been no indication since that it would happen.

Few athletes have had a month stranger than the one Patrick McCaw just had. Golden State declined to match the sheet.

The Cavaliers released McCaw before his salary for the rest of the season could become guaranteed. "But if the National Basketball Association voided McCaw's contract, he could become a restricted free agent again".

So at the end of the day, the only thing McCaw accomplished was escaping a team that has won three of the last four National Basketball Association championships.

If the Cavs were convicted and lose their 2019 first-round pick, the entire landscape of the National Basketball Association could be shaken up.
