Lt. Travis Lyman told Fox13 that the 17-year-old female driver of the pickup truck was driving on the Layton Parkway with a 16-year-old male passenger when she chose to take part in the challenge and blind herself using a beanie.
"Bird Box Challenge while driving... predictable result", the department said.
Named after a Netflix horror movie, the challenge involves participants blindfolding themselves while trying to perform everyday tasks - the latest in a long line of risky social media phenomena.
The popularity of the challenge even prompted Netflix to issue a warning against unsafe behavior. And according to police in Layton City, Utah, the stunt resulted in a pretty nasty accident earlier this week.
The 17-year-old, her 16-year-old passenger and the occupants of the SUV were "luckily" not injured. She skidded into oncoming traffic, hit a vehicle and a light pole. Lyman said reckless driving charges against the teen were being considered.
What is the "Bird Box Challenge"?
In the film, Bullock plays a mother of two young children who constantly wears a blindfold to avoid seeing mysterious forces that compel people to take their own lives. "Would you?" The challenge reached its mature form of meme when YouTuber and professional brain genius Jake Paul posted a video of himself trying it for his young, impressionable audience.
A teen driver attempting a new and unsafe fad inspired by a Netflix movie caused a crash earlier this week, Layton Police say. "We don't know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes".
