Ken Whisenhunt was the head coach for most of the years that Kitchens was in Arizona, and he would be considered for the job, except that he is now running a pretty successful offense in Los Angeles for the Chargers.
The Browns had gone 1-31 in the previous two seasons under Jackson.
The name that is most commonly next to Kitchens on an offensive staff is Todd Haley, and there is no way that John Dorsey and Company are allowing within 500 miles of Berea, OH.
"(They) wanted to hire Mike McCarthy as head coach with stipulation Freddie Kitchens remain with team as OC, McCarthy declined", Les Levine reported on 92.3 The Fan today. "Cleveland and I get along well". His play-calling energized Mayfield, who finished with a rookie record 27 touchdown passes, with 19 of those coming when Kitchens was calling the plays.
Kitchens has emerged as a favorite along with Stefanski, who according to several reports is returning to the Browns' facility in Berea, Ohio, for a second interview. He took over the Browns offense when coordinator Todd Haley was sacked an hour after coach Hue Jackson's dismissal on October 29 and Kitchens quickly showed he had coaching chops. Jackson only won three games in his two and a half years as head coach. The Browns also interviewed former Lions head coach Jim Caldwell, Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, and Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores for the job.
An official announcement from the Browns announcing Kitchens is expected later this afternoon.
