A lot of Sooner fans left Hard Rock Stadium disappointed on Saturday night following the University of Oklahoma's loss in the 2018 Capital One Orange Bowl.
Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman Trophy victor Kyler Murray passed for 308 yards and ran for 109 - but didn't throw his first completion until the Sooners were already in a 21-0 hole. He was also Oklahoma's leading rusher, gaining 131 yards on 17 carries and a score in what is expected to be his final game with the Sooners. He would make a handful of spectacular plays, throwing for 308 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but it was too little, too late.
"If anything, last night just makes me hungrier", said Riley Sunday morning.
Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was only four weeks removed from a high-ankle sprain, was accurate and efficient, completing 24-of-27 passes for 318 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Remind me again: We played all these games this season why? But you've got to keep doing that. You don't sit there and say we didn't get [it] done.
OU fifth-year senior linebacker Curtis Bolton said, "We just flat-out didn't play good enough".
We've seen the outcome on that too many times.
"I always felt like it might be, honestly", Murray said. I wanted to win a national championship.
"We've had some really good teams here the last four years, but I don't know that we've ever had a team, and I just told them that in the locker room, that has had the fight in them that this team has, and that's going to do wonders for our program". I don't know what it is about them, but they heal differently than the rest of the population.
Marquis Brown ended the game with zero catches, despite being targeted several times through three quarters. "One stop was going to lose them the game".
Maybe Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley will leave for the NFL and the Bucs after seeing there was no future in the College Football Playoff, not with Nick Saban and Alabama pulling its first-half velociraptor act (28-0 lead) before coasting on in for a 45-34 national semifinal Orange Bowl win while making Oklahoma Heisman victor and two-sport wonder Kyler Murray long for A's pitchers and catchers reporting. I think he's done a tremendous job with the offense; Lincoln Riley's done a tremendous job as well. The 295-pound defensive lineman started with his opinion, but something stopped Williams from saying what he really meant right in the middle of his sentence. For the time being, his focus is directly on the college football playoff semifinal game on Saturday against the defending champion Alabama Crimson Tide. "We understand it's just competition".
Behind their leader, quarterback Kyler Murray, however, the Sooners rallied and twice in the second half pulled to within 11 points of the Crimson Tide, but that was as close as they would get.
