The race for Florida governor appears headed for a recount, as Democrat Andrew Gillum continues to gain on Republican Ron DeSantis during the tallying of the final uncounted ballots cast in the midterm elections.
"Our campaign, along with our attorney Barry Richard, is monitoring the situation closely and is ready for any outcome, including a state-mandated recount", Cervone added.
NBC News has called DeSantis the "apparent" victor in the governor race, while votes are still being counted in places like Broward County and margins appear to be tightening slightly. A hand recount of ballots, longer and more thorough than a machine recount, is triggered if the margin falls below 0.25 points. The U.S. Senate race between Bill Nelson and Rick Scott is nearly certainly headed to a manual recount. If the margins remain under the 0.5 percent threshold, recounts must be ordered under state law.
Media captionThe Democratic candidate in Georgia's gubernatorial race will not concede until all the state's votes are counted. Fried now leads by just 575 votes as of Thursday afternoon, meaning this race will likely require a recount as well.
Due to a combination of racism, Andrew Gillum's alleged involvement in an FBI investigation, the obvious suppression of 1.4 million formerly incarcerated people's votes, and a few other factors, Florida's major statewide races this year were remarkably close.
County election officials have until noon on November 10 to report unofficial results to the state.
"Since that time, it has become clear there are many more uncounted ballots than was originally reported", Cervone said. A recount is automatically triggered if the margin drops below 0.5 points. They had counted more than 695,700 ballots counted by early Thursday morning.
Thursday, Nov. 15: If a machine recount is ordered, the second round of unofficial returns is due from the counties at 3 p.m.
Elias also stressed anyone who filed a provisional ballot should contact their supervisors of elections office by 5 p.m. Thursday to fix any issues with the ballot and make sure it would be counted.
There is zero chance that a recount will reverse a gap in the ranges of either the senate or gubernatorial races. The deadline to cure provisional ballots is 5pm Thursday, but campaign officials expect that to be extended by a few days.
"We are requesting the total number of provisional ballots in Pasco County, and the voter information for these ballots", Grace Albergo, regional political director for Scott's campaign, wrote in an email published by The Tampa Bay Times. In 2016, there were 24,460 provisional ballots submitted, with 10,998 ballots ultimately being counted, according to the Florida Division of Elections.
Election officials in other Florida counties may have disclosed the identities of which voters cast provisional ballots, however.
"I believe Sen. Nelson will prevail", Elias said.
"Let's be clear: When Elias says 'win, ' he means 'steal, ' " Scott's campaign said. She said Democrats set up phone banks and began calling those voters, urging them to go to county offices to present their identification information so that their ballots will count. Folks who lived through the 2000 election are going into dissociative fugue states.
