Lowe's and its related businesses operate or service almost 2,400 locations and employ more than 310,000 people.
The affected stores, with locations including New York, Texas and California, as well as British Columbia and other Canadian provinces, are expected to close before February 1, 2019.
Lowe's last month opened a second store in Windsor, Ont.
In total, the company is closing 27 under-performing Rona stores and four Lowe's locations and blamed lagging sales for the decision.
N.C. -based Lowe's is closing several locations.
The company said it would provide more details on the impact of the store closings when it releases its third-quarter earnings November 20.
The Mooresville, North Carolina-based company said most employees at the affected stores, which are located within 10 miles of one another, will have opportunities to "transition to a similar role" at a nearby Lowe's location.
He said the company has also been facing fierce competition from fellow home improvement businesses Home Depot Inc. and Canadian Tire Inc. and to some extent, Costco Wholesale Corp. and Walmart Inc., which are "extremely powerful" and stock some home and garden products. Lowe's reports financial results Wednesday, Nov. 16.
This summer, for instance, Lowe's announced that it's shutting down its Orchard Supply Hardware chain, which the company bought in 2013 for $205 million, in order "focus on its core home improvement business".
