No information about the Knoxville victor is available until the prize is claimed.
"It's hard to overstate how exciting this is - but now it's really getting fun", Gordon Medenica, lead director of the Mega Millions Group and director of Maryland Lottery and Gaming, tells CNN.
Both lottery jackpots will approach new heights this week.
The next Mega Millions drawing is at 11 p.m. EST Tuesday. The second-largest jackpot was a $1.586 billion Powerball drawing on January 13, 2016.
There were a number of runner-up prizes. There are smaller prizes, from $2 up to $1 million, for matching some, but not all, numbers.
The $2 million victor has not yet claimed their prize.
