With a more affordable price and no need for a pricey PC, Oculus is hoping to get 10 million people invested in its ecosystem, at which point, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says Oculus should become a self sustaining platform that will generate profit for devs while also keeping the company's VR platform rich with content.
Oculus touted the possibility of "arena-scale" VR experiences, but the possibility of multi-room VR, along with warnings for players drifting too close to walls or furniture, can help developers break out of the box of VR design. The device launches next spring and will have 50 titles available at launch, including the critically acclaimed Moss. Using 4 powerful ultrawide angle sensors on the four corners of the headset's front face, the Quest actively scans your surroundings and your position in relation to them, allowing you to move forward and back, left and right, and even up and down, so that your gaming experience is dynamic, rather than you just sitting in a chair or standing in one place. That standalone VR headset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with 3GB of RAM.
Compared to the Oculus Go's 1280 x 1440 per eye, the Oculus Quest also offers a much higher resolution of 1600x1440 resolution per eye.
Within Insight, there is also a feature called Guardian that is created to avoid users from bumping into walls or other objects that might be on users way when they used Quest.
At the unveiling of the Quest, Oculus also revealed Oculus Insight - a "breakthrough technology that powers inside-out tracking, Guardian, and Touch controller tracking". The Go is meant to make good VR affordable, the Quest provides a standalone experience with high-quality Rift-like experiences and the Rift can connect to a PC for the highest-end experiences possible.
Originally known as Santa Cruz, the Oculus Quest supposedly represents Oculus' attempt to deliver the holy grail of VR - wireless usage, built-in tracking, solid performance, and no need for a PC.
Oculus Quest is a standalone VR headset, meaning that it doesn't require a PC or a mobile phone to run VR games and experiences.
As you can see from the photo and video above, the Oculus Quest consists of a headset and two motion controllers.
