"Say something else", Kyrgios said towards his box. This was the worst part of the match for Roger who had to play against three break points in the fifth game as well, fending off all three with nice attacks and closing the game with another forehand victor to move 3-2 in front.
"Incredible fighting spirit", Cilic said of de Minaur after the young Aussie kept him on court until 2.22 am (0622 GMT) Sunday morning - the second-latest finish in US Open history.
Federer commenced his US Open campaign with a comfortable 6-2 6-2 6-4 victory under the lights on Arthur Ashe over Yoshihito Nishioka, who despite a commendable effort, was thoroughly outclassed.
Andreev did the same in the fourth set but he couldn't stay at the same level in the decider, missing the opportunity to pull the break back at 2-4 in the final set to hand the win to his rival.
Federer's 6-4 6-1 7-5 clinic left Kyrgios in a reflective mood.
"He should have hit a normal forehand in the open court and he chooses to go for sort of the drop shot, which at the end cost him the match", Federer reportedly said. "If you're not serving well, he takes advantage of it".
Gracious himself in defeat, Kyrgios lamented not converting any of four break-point chances in the seventh game of the opening set, in which he had Federer down love-40. Roger had 23 service winners and he was the dominant figure in the first and third sets, placing his shots well and breaking Andy's defense with accurate attacks and net rushings. Those losses weren't great for me, either.
"It was not on my mind, but I was pretty close past year", Thiem said. I'm feeling great now, too. I thought I was playing really well in the first set. I have beaten him before.
The other quarterfinal on the top half of the draw will be defending champion Sloane Stephens of the US against No. 19 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in a rematch from the same round a year ago.
At one point during the second set after missing a shot, he yelled out, "I need to hire a coach".
The defending men's champion Rafael Nadal reached his fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal of the season, and 36th of his career, by getting past Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4, while No. 11 John Isner of the US made it that far at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2011.
"I'm really looking forward to making the most of a second week at a grand slam", he said. I did a lot of things well during the whole season.
After 14 appearances at the slams, his best showing so far is a quarter-final run at this year's French Open.
"Clearly", Federer said, "when you play that way and you lose, it's always, like, you feel like he's so much to blame". But, I mean, obviously I want to achieve more in the sport.
