Nvidia's new GeForce RTX series graphics cards are based on the company's brand-new Turing architecture, which it revealed last week at Siggraph with the launch of the company's Quadro RTX workstation graphics cards. Customers can now buy the machines with the new GeForce RTX 2070, 2080, or the 2080 Ti GPUs.
At Gamescom 2018, Nvidia held a press conference to announce and detail its next generation of video cards. Asus has also announced the availability of Strix, Turbo, and Dual variants of its cards, but pricing has not yet been revealed.
The RTX 2080 Ti is due for release on September 20 this year, costing the princely sum of $999. A tank firing off-screen might now be able to be seen directly, but with the RTX ray tracing enabled you'd be able to see the reflection of the explosion rendered in real time by reflective surfaces across the map.
The new NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs have reinvented graphics and set a new bar for performance.
"Turing opens up a new golden age of gaming, with realism only possible with ray tracing, which most people thought was still a decade away", said Jensen Huang, founder, and CEO of NVIDIA, speaking before Gamescom, the world's largest gaming expo.
This is a light rendering technique that basically gives developers the ability to calculate shadows and reflections right down to a single beam of light in order to create hyper-realistic graphics such as the ones we saw in the jaw-dropping Star Wars Unreal Engine ray tracing teaser released back at GDC in March. Huang said. However, the company leapfrogged current hardware limitations by using AI-powered software algorithms in Turing to predict and render how light rays will appear to a human eye over a game environment. That task was hard to do well in the past, Huang said in his presentation.
Turing is NVIDIA's brand new, eight-generation architecture that succeeds Pascal.
Despite all the talk of ray tracing, the effect can be pretty subtle.
However, The Division 2 and Anthem are not the only games that might feature the Real-Time Ray Tracing as the upcoming Battlefield V and Shadow Of The Tomb Raider might also support Real-Time Ray Tracing. The ray-tracing mainly created more shadows around characters and environments using different degrees of darkness, from pitch black to softer shades of gray. Fortunately for us, there will be three triple-A titles that will fully support NVIDIA's ray-tracing technology at launch.
