I thought, 'Why not?

"None of this could have happened without our lady of soul", the Like A Virgin singer said.

Madonna paid homage to the legendary singer Aretha Franklin at the MTV VMAs on Monday, but the tribute didn't sit well with some fans of the "Queen of Soul".

Madonna presents a tribute to Aretha Franklin, pictured on screen, at the MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall on Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, in NY.

Madonna's rambling tribute was both heartfelt and a cautionary tale about what happens when you reach a certain stratosphere where the obscene wealth and fame insulates you from people who might challenge your shitty ideas and ultimately protect you from your own delusions. Finally, the phone rang, it was one of the producers, saying, 'We don't think you are right for this job.' I'm like, 'Motherf-ker, why are you calling me?' He replied, 'We think you have great potential.

In her speech, Madonna talked about an audition at the start of her career when she sang Franklin's (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.

"Madonna spoke about herself during that entire Aretha Franklin speech", one remarked. She led me to where I am today, and I know she influenced so many people in this room tonight.

Madonna stole headlines at last night's MTV VMAs (above), and not the good kind.

Look at all the somewhat confused reactions (below) about Madonna's tribute to Aretha that turned out to be a long story all about Madonna...! I said, 'Bitch, I'm Madonna.' "So, you are probably all wondering why I am telling you this story".

"I'm so lost", radio host Charlamagne Tha God tweeted.

Madonna said she ended up singing the tune, which she knew "by heart", acapella.

It didn't take long before Madonna became a trending topic on Twitter, as the Internet called out the pop superstar for turning what was supposed to be a tribute to Franklin into a Madonna monologue.

"You do not disrespect an ICON like that", wrote Nina Parker on Twitter. The queen of pop was given the honor of paying tribute to the "Queen of Soul", who passed away at the age of 76 from pancreatic cancer on August 16.
