In a bombshell claim, Mr Cohen said he was with the President when Donald Trump Jr told him Russians were expected to offer his campaign dirt on Hillary Clinton at a June 2016 meeting, CNN reports. The episode has come under scrutiny by special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Cohen's claim would contradict repeated denials by Trump, Donald Trump Jr., their lawyers and other administration officials who had said that the President knew nothing about the Trump Tower meeting until he was approached about it by The New York Times in July 2017.
Cohen's belief was perhaps fueled by his standing as a jack-of-all-trades, a self-described "fixer" for Trump who managed everything from real estate branding deals and hush money payments to assembling a diversity coalition during the 2016 campaign.
After the reports indicating Cohen would say otherwise, Alan Futerfas, an attorney representing Trump Jr. told USA TODAY that "We are very confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Mr. Trump, Jr., and on his behalf".
During his televised appearances Sunday, Giuliani continued to rail against Trump's former personal attorney, telling CBS, "I don't see how you can believe Michael Cohen", and accusing Cohen of violating Trump's attorney-client privilege.
"Cohen is not a, you know, a heroic figure, but he does have credibility", Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Virginia, told CNN's Jim Sciutto on "The Situation Room".
Three days after Cohen's new lawyer, Lanny Davis, released a tape of Cohen and Trump talking about paying for Playboy model Karen McDougal's silence, the relationship splintered further Friday.
In May, Giuliani said that Cohen was "honest", and just a few weeks ago he said he didn't think Cohen would lie, saying, "I think he is going to tell the truth". "First off, we don't know where this came from, we don't know if this is anything Michael Cohen really is even willing to say because the response of his legal team was, "Not us, it didn't come from us" And then you don't even know if it's true", Christie said in an interview Friday with Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America".
Longtime Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg has been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury in the Michael Cohen investigation, according to The Wall Street Journal. The sources said Cohen does not have any evidence, including tapes, to back up his claims. The Russian government said through intermediaries to Trump Jr. that it was supporting Trump and wanted to help the campaign.
The President was alluding to Cohen, who faces a federal criminal investigation over his personal business dealings involving the taxi industry in New York, Efe reported.
The Thursday reports of Cohen's claims is further evidence that Cohen could flip on Trump in the Russian Federation investigation - which would be a nightmare for Trump's legal team.
Per Giuliani, Trump and other participants in that alleged meeting claim it did not occur, and that Cohen has provided different dates for the discussion. The Times also reported in June that Trump personally dictated a misleading statement about the objective of the meeting, even after his aides repeatedly denied that he did so.
Why would it matter if Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting? .
Sources tell CNN numerous tapes include discussions with reporters and conversations relating to President Trump. Trump has denied having had an encounter with Daniels.
Trump has repeatedly raged that the Mueller probe is a "witch hunt" and that there was "no collusion" with Russians by his campaign.
