Though the Narendra Modi government defeated the no-confidence motion, Congress hailed Rahul's "hug" and said that he has shown the mirror of love and compassion to Modi and given the country a new political discourse that can bind it together. While 325 MPs voted in favour of the NDA government, the opposition could garner support of just 126 members.
Gandhi said the Prime Minister and BJP President Amit Shah were different type of politicians unlike those from the Congress. Modi initially looked non-plussed and did not stand up, but recovered quickly and called Gandhi back and patted him on the back. "Hug crushes 56-inch chest that responds with anger and hate", the daily said.
On Gandhi's allegations on the Rafale aircraft deal, he said "we must abstain from making childish statements on sensitive issues".
At the end of his around 40-minute speech, Gandhi walked across to the treasury benches and hugged Modi who was surprised. "In his reply, Modi asked all Lok Sabha members to dismiss the non-confidence motion, which he said was driven by arrogance and Congress" attempt to test its own probable allies.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi after ending his speech moved across the floor to get to the treasury benches to the Prime Minister. During an election rally in Agra on November 21, 2013, Modi, NDA's prime ministerial candidate at that time, had promised one crore jobs. He said the party moved no-confidence motion were once with the NDA.
Prime Minister Modi also countered Gandhi's attack on the Doklam issue and said, "Sometimes we should not touch upon issues that are beyond us".
"She stood outside Rashtrapati Bhavan and said, "we have 272 and more are joining us". He said when PM Modi went to France, "with some magic" powers, the price per plane increased to '1,600 crore, much more than '520 crore when the Congress was in power.
"I pray to God to give you the strength to bring a no- confidence motion in 2024 also". He (Rahul) had said last time that when he would speak, there would be an quake.
He rounded it off saying he was both a chowkidar and a bhagidar (sentinel as well as the partner of the poor) and never a "saudagar or thekedar" (those who strike deals and contracts). On Rafale, he admonished Rahul in an nearly paternalistic tone for bringing disrepute to a defence procurement entered into by two nations. He said that he had met French President in New Delhi who had told him there no such secrecy agreement with the Indian government. "She destabilised Atal-Ji's government and never formed one herself", he said. These states are peaceful and prospering. "Andhra Pradesh was divided for political gain", he added.
The truth is that Modi is not a "chowkidar" but a "bhagidaar" in the wrong-doings, the Congress chief said.
