Following his meeting with his South Korean and Japanese counterpart Kang Kyung-wha and Taro Kono, Pompeo said while there was progress made on denuclearization, the United States and its allies will continue to apply worldwide sanctions until North Korea completely abandons its nuclear arsenal.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pompeo did not meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as he has done on two previous visits to North Korea this year.
But in a harsh response issued just hours after Pompeo arrived in Tokyo, the North blasted the discussions, saying the visit had been "regrettable" and that Washington's "gangster-like" demands were aimed at forcing it to abandon nuclear weapons.
By analyzing the results of Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang, Japanese officials are trying to gauge how seriously North Korea is committing itself to the "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" that was agreed in the Trump-Kim meeting in Singapore.
At the summit, Mr. Kim committed to complete denuclearization in return for US security guarantees. -South Korean military exercises.
"I have confidence that Kim Jong-un will honor the contract we signed and, even more importantly, our handshake", he said, before suggesting that China was attempting to strain relations between the USA and North Korea because of Trump's trade tariffs.
Mr Pompeo did not meet Mr Kim.
"The issues the United States side insisted on during the talks were the same cancerous ones that the past U.S. administrations had insisted on", the ministry said, referring to the idea of compete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.
On Sunday, Iowa GOP Senator Joni Ernst said the US should restart its military exercises with South Korea if talks don't continue.
Pompeo was under increased pressure to show progress after reports that Kim expanded his nuclear weapons production in the run up the Singapore summit.
However, following the stinging commentary from the North, he allowed that the goal of denuclearization would be hard and that much work remains.
But officials have allowed three North Korean feature films and six short movies to be screened at the annual Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival on Seoul's outskirts from July 12, organizers said.
After high-level diplomatic talks with North Korea took a contentious turn over the weekend, the Trump Administration remained optimistic that the isolated nation will disarm its growing nuclear arsenal.
Those include the formation of working group to determine exactly how North Korea's denuclearization will be verified and a Thursday meeting with Pentagon officials to discuss the return of remains of Americans soldiers killed during the Korean War.
"It seems the USA misunderstood our goodwill and patience", the statement said.
Skepticism has grown over how and whether North Korea will dismantle its nuclear weapons program amid USA media reports that the country has continued to develop nuclear facilities.
"There are things that I have to clarify as well", said Pompeo. With Trump waging an ill-advised trade war against China, Beijing now has less incentive than ever to help the United States by pressuring Pyongyang, as Trump himself acknowledges. "I really believe that he sees a different future for North Korea", Trump told reporters.
"There's no doubt in my mind that it's the Chinese pulling a North Koreans back", Graham said.
Vice Chairman Kim Yong Chol noted Saturday that "the world is paying close attention to our meeting".
