51 points, eight rebounds and eight blocked shots from LeBron James were not enough as his Cleveland Cavaliers lost game one of the NBA Finals to the defending champion Golden State Warriors, 124-114 in overtime.
Of course, Game 1 was a classic, perhaps throwing salt on the theory people are bored with these two teams playing each other. "We're in the fight now".
"I read that play just as well as I've read any play in my career, maybe in my life", James said. I don't give up on any of my players or team-mates. "I don't know what was going through J.R.'s head". I stepped in, took the contact. It's a huge play.
James responded: "What do you mean I'm not sure?"
Referee Ken Mauer defended the choice to review the call.
Speaking at the press conference, James said: 'We have to move on. Either call a blocking foul or call an offensive foul.
After the game, Cavs coach Tyron Lue told media that had been the case, shortly before Smith spoke to media and claimed he was in fact aware the scores were tied. "I knew he was late on the drive and I knew I had my man beat and he came over a little late".
"And they called a charge, right?"
Cleveland's George Hill later went to the line with his team down 1 with four seconds left.
"It's never been done before where he's outside the restricted, and then you go there and overturn the call and say it's a block". However, rather than put a shot attempt up, he franticly dribbled out of the paint. As James expressed his frustration, Smith was caught telling him, "I thought we were ahead" and looked apologetic for his mistake.
Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue told reporters after the game that Smith "thought we were up one" when he made his freakish decision. I was trying to get enough space because Kevin [Durant] was standing right there.
"We hope to get the best of him (James) in this series, and that's what we're going to try to do", said Curry.
"I knew it was tied", he said.
"But the way it went down to the wire, we were scrambling on that last missed free throw trying to get the rebound and saw JR [Smith] ran it back to half court".
Thanks for following the blog today, I hope it added something to this thrilling contest and I wish you all a great weekend.
