Israeli firefighters attempt to extinguish a fire in a wheat field near the Kibbutz of Nahal Oz, along the border with the Gaza strip, on May 8, 2018 after it was caused by incendiaries tied to kites flown by Palestinian protesters from across the border.
The Israeli side of the crossing, several hundred metres away, was not breached. More than 1,700 have been wounded by army fire during that period. "The crossing will remain closed until the damage caused by the riots are repaired and will reopen in accordance with a situation assessment", the Israel Defense Forces said on Twitter, adding that Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman approved "the recommendation to close the crossing". Israel's position has generally been that Palestinian refugees and their descendants would become citizens of a Palestinian state at the culmination of the peace process, just as Jews who fled or were forced out of Middle Eastern countries by hostile governments became citizens of Israel.
Nissim Jan, the director of an Israeli company that operates Kerem Shalom in partnership with private Palestinian companies, said he spent large sums to fix last week's damage.
In an Instagram post with a picture of herself touching the Western Wall during her visit last May, she wrote, "With great joy, I am returning to Jerusalem".
There were no reports of damage or casualties in Palestinian media from the May 6 strikes.
The ministry said that the positions of Hungary, Romani and the Czech Republic contradict the European Union policy and their action against such a statement is "a clear breach of worldwide law, United Nations resolutions, the Geneva Conventions and the human rights principles", adding that it encourages the "Israeli occupation authorities to continue violating global law".
On Friday, thousand of Palestinians gathered along the Israel-Gaza frontier.
The ministry identified the protester killed Friday as a 40-year-old man who was shot in the chest east of the southern town of Khan Younis. Hamas seeks an Islamic state in the entire historic Palestine, including what is now Israel, but has said it is ready for a long-term truce.
The development brings the death toll of Friday's protests up to two. "We look forward to celebrating Israel's 70th anniversary and the bright future ahead". While the official date is May 15, the protest is scheduled for May 14, to avoid conflicting with the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
Egypt opens the crossing from time to time, mainly to allow people in special categories, including medical patients and Gaza residents studying overseas, to leave the territory or return to it. A separate people crossing in northern Gaza remains open. Citing security concerns, Israel maintains tight control over its land and sea borders.
One Palestinian was shot dead and more than 400 people were injured Friday in the last "March of Return" protest at the Gaza-Israel border, which has run for seven straight weeks.
Friday marked the seventh weekly border protest since late March. Israel says it has a right to defend its border and has accused Hamas of using the protests as a cover for attacking the border.
Earlier this week, Hamas's leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar said he hoped that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians would breach the border fence from Gaza into Israel during next week's protests.
