On Twitter, Hogan wrote, "the First Lady and I are shocked and grieved by the sudden passing of [Kamenetz]".
Kamenetz spent 24 years as a council and executive in Baltimore County and was serving his second term as Baltimore County executive.
Kamenetz's rivals in the Democratic primary for governor also released statements in the wake of his passing.
Under Maryland election law, Ervin has until May 17-40 days before the June 26 primary-to decide whether she wants to replace Kamenetz as the gubernatorial candidate or designate someone to run in his place.
Governor Hogan directed all state flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of his funeral. Until then, the county's administrative officer, Fred Homan, will serve as acting county executive. Rich Madaleno (D-Kensington), Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker, former Michelle Obama adviser Krishanti Vignarajah, former NAACP President Ben Jealous, tech entrepreneur Alec Ross and Baltimore attorney James Shea. "My heart goes out to Jill and his family, along with his many friends and staff".
Hogan called Kamenetz "a dedicated public servant in Baltimore County for more than two decades".
Kevin Kamenetz is survived by his wife, Jill, and sons Karson and Dylan.
