Baltimore County Executive and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kevin Kamenetz has died following a cardiac arrest, according to multiple reports.

Baltimore County Police said Kamenetz was asleep at his home in Owings Mills.

Officials will hold a briefing later this morning. "In the hard days to come, we will provide any support we possibly can to the Kamenetz family and the citizens of Baltimore County".

On Twitter, Hogan wrote, "the First Lady and I are shocked and grieved by the sudden passing of [Kamenetz]".

Kamenetz spent 24 years as a council and executive in Baltimore County and was serving his second term as Baltimore County executive.

Kamenetz's rivals in the Democratic primary for governor also released statements in the wake of his passing.

Under Maryland election law, Ervin has until May 17-40 days before the June 26 primary-to decide whether she wants to replace Kamenetz as the gubernatorial candidate or designate someone to run in his place.

Governor Hogan directed all state flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of his funeral. Until then, the county's administrative officer, Fred Homan, will serve as acting county executive.
