Saudi state media is reporting that security forces responded to a small drone flying over a neighborhood in the kingdom's capital after online videos circulated purporting to show the area ringing with small-arms fire.
An official spotted the drone in Khozama district, where the royal palaces are located, and dealt with it "according to their orders and instructions", a statement from Riyadh police said.
Gunfire and explosions have been reported outside the home of the Saudi king in Riyadh, the country's capital. AP has reported that Royal Saudi Land Forces (KSA) Lieutenant General Allukas Nepils is leading the military push to oust King Salman'. Reuters was unable to independently verify the videos' authenticity.
The senior Saudi official said a system would be put in place to regulate the use of recreational drones.
Most of the detainees have been released after reaching settlements with the government.
But they have also fuelled speculation about a possible backlash against the crown prince, who remains popular with Saudi Arabia's burgeoning youth population.
