Senate President Pro Tem Ron Richard, House Speaker Todd Richardson and other House leaders called on Greitens to step down Tuesday after the state's attorney general found evidence that Greitens may have committed a felony in his use of a charity donor list for political purposes.
August 2007: Greitens, a former Navy SEAL officer, founds the charity The Mission Continues in St. Louis.
October 2016: The Associated Press reports that Greitens' campaign had obtained an electronic spreadsheet of top donors to The Mission Continues as he began his campaign in 2015.
Hawley says it's up to the St. Louis circuit attorney to decide whether to charge Greitens with a crime.
McCaskill campaign spokeswoman Meira Bernstein in a statement criticized Hawley for not acting sooner against Greitens and said the timing shows "gross incompetence on the part of the attorney general". He's accused of taking a nonconsensual photo of a partially nude woman with whom he had an affair in 2015, before he was elected.
Greitens responded on Twitter, saying, quote, "I will not be resigning the governor's office".
These are the second criminal allegations brought against Greitens, who is already facing invasion of privacy charges.
Greitens initially denied to the AP in 2016 that he had used the donor list for his campaign. "Under Missouri law, this is known as computer tampering and given the value of the list in question, it is a felony", Hawley said. Attorney general spokeswoman Mary Compton says that's not related to Hawley's investigation into the charity's possible violations of the state's consumer protection and charitable registration and reporting laws. He says it's up to the St. Louis prosecutor to decide whether to charge Greitens.
Lawyers also complain that prosecutors withheld a tape of an interview until after a Missouri House committee investigating Greitens released a report of their investigation into his 2015 affair.
That investigation deals with the governor's alleged use of a donor list from a charity. "It's an issue that's easy for me to understand - you do not commingle non-profit lists with political activity".
Hawley denied that his Senate candidacy influenced his handling of the case. "If such investigation or prosecution is to be conducted, it must be conducted by a court-appointed special prosecutor independent of the (attorney general's office)". The AP found that Greitens' campaign had raised almost $2 million from donors who previously gave significant amounts to The Mission Continues.
