A woman believed to have intentionally driven her wife and children off a cliff in the U.S. state of California was legally drunk, the local sheriff's office said.

Toxicology tests found Jennifer Hart had an alcohol level of 0.102, said California Patrol Capt. Bruce Carpenter.

The SUV carrying their large family from Washington state accelerated straight off a scenic California cliff and authorities said the deadly wreck may have been intentional.

The crash scene, about 322 km north of San Francisco, was discovered by a passing motorist on March 26.

Jennifer, her wife Sarah and three of their children were found dead after their vehicle plunged into the Pacific Ocean March 26.

The California Highway Patrol, reached Friday afternoon by The Oregonian/OregonLive, couldn't confirm the Associated Press report.

Heaven's been at home because her mother said on March 1 she could not believe her little girl came home from daycare with three front teeth missing, a busted lip and a swollen, bloody nose. Devonte Hart had made headlines years before the crash when a picture of him hugging a police officer during police-brutality protests went viral.

Mendocino County Sheriff Thomas Allman says the body was found Friday morning about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of where the family's SUV fell into the rain-swollen Eel River last week.

He noted the Yukon had traveled some 23 metres along an unpaved roadside pullout before running off the cliff, leaving behind no skid or brake marks, indicating the vehicle may have been driven off the cliff intentionally. But he declined to say precisely how high it was.

"Sarah Hart and two of the children had a positive toxicology finding in their blood for Diphenhydramine, an active ingredient in Benadryl", it said.

Search teams found debris and personal effects identified as belonging to the Thottapilly family on Thursday. A body of a Black female was found in the ocean and not far from the crash site, which authorities believe is Hannah or Sierra, but are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

The lost vehicle was reportedly southbound on Highway 101, pulled into a turnout and went over the side and into the river.
