Apart from fellow 1s Louisville and Notre Dame, 2 seeds South Carolina, Texas, Oregon, and Baylor are all formidable opponents. But the Fighting Irish haven't made the Final Four since 2015 and are pretty clearly the weakest top seed. It's a small thing - and a trade Louisville would likely make to stay at home, but it's a loss. Attendance the first two years was, shall we say, spotty. Georgia might have been the last team to get home-court advantage for the first two rounds, as top-four seeds do.
Follow @ncaawbb The most decorated women's basketball program in history, UConn was shocked a year ago, when the Mississippi State Bulldogs defeated the Huskies, 66-64 in overtime in the national semifinals at the 2017 Women's Final Four in Dallas. But given that Sherri Coale is more willing than most coaches to go to hard places, losing this season at South Dakota State, hopefully this bid at least sends a message about scheduling. If Notre Dame advances, the Irish would head out west to potentially face No. 2 seed OR if the seeds hold.
Northern Colorado: The strongest seed of any of the five teams making their NCAA tournament debuts, No. 10 Northern Colorado heads to Waco, Texas, with a legitimate chance to compete against No. 7 MI in the first round.
Louisville, ranked third among the 1-seeds by the selection committee, will open with 16-seed Boise State on March 16 with Marquette vs. Dayton being the 8/9 matchup.
CONFERENCE SUPREMECY: The Southeastern Conference reigned with seven teams in the final poll, led by Mississippi State.
Their only defeat came at the hands of SC in the SEC tournament final, a result that the Gamecocks used as a statement of intent.
Oklahoma got in with a 16-14 record - the fewest wins for an at-large team since 2005 - a day after the Oklahoma men got an at-large berth with an 18-13 record and losses in 11 of their final 15 games. Purdue, Rutgers, Southern Cal and West Virginia were the first four teams out. "We went through those resumes and their body of work".
All four teams are perennial powerhouses in their respective conferences and they will no doubt make the 2018 NCAA women's basketball tournament a lot of fun to watch.
Quinnipiac is seeded No. 9 in the same region and will open at Gampel against No. 8 Miami on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
