The Washington Post first reported that Mueller has gathered evidence that the secret meeting in Seychelles was an attempt to establish a back channel between Russian Federation and the incoming Trump administration.
While there is no indication that Nader is suspected of wrongdoing, his knowledge of key meetings involving the Emiratis and others could be helpful to the special counsel in understanding the inner workings of the transition and possible efforts to influence key figures in the administration.
"We don't know what happened [in the Seychelles meeting], but if [Mueller] fails to investigate that, he's not doing his job", Napolitano said.
Democrats on the House intelligence committee are sounding alarms about testimony regarding who attended a January 2017 meeting in the Seychelles that's come under intense scrutiny in the Trump-Russia probes.
The newspaper's report said that George Nader, a Lebanese American businessman it said helped organize and attended the Seychelles meeting, testified before a grand jury as investigators look into discussions between the Trump transition team and emissaries of the Kremlin.
The Post said Nader has been cooperating with Mueller and has met numerous times with investigators since he was stopped and questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation after he arrived at Washington's Dulles International Airport in January. WaPo's reporting at the time also relied on anonymous sources - the legacy outlet has frequently used such journalistic techniques while reporting on the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
Obama's National Security Adviser Susan Rice explained during a September 2017 House Intelligence Committee interview why she unmasked Prince and members of Trump's transition team. Trump says there was no collusion between Moscow and his campaign and calls the investigation a witch hunt. He told congressional investigators that his meeting with Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, was a passing encounter over a drink at the bar of the Four Seasons in the Seychelles, an island nation in the Indian Ocean. Those outlets also reported Nader attended that Seychelles meeting a year ago.
Before Congress, Prince denied that the meeting was nefarious or even planned, and only lasted as long as it took the two men to drink a beer together.
