The unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion explained during a post-fight press conference early Sunday morning why coming back to knock out Luis Ortiz late Saturday night is a more remarkable achievement than Joshua getting off the canvas to beat Wladimir Klitschko by 11th-round technical knockout 10 months ago. After the fight, Wilder said he is ready to take on the soon-to-be unified WBA, IBF and WBO champion.
DEONTAY WILDER paved the way for a megafight with Anthony Joshua with a brutal stoppage of Luis Ortiz in NY. In the first meeting last May in Oxon Hill, Maryland, Uzcategui was disqualified for hitting Dirrell with a punch that landed after the bell signalling the end of the eighth round.
However Wilder rallied and sent out a warning to any future opponents with a powerful finish to stop Ortiz. I proved that tonight. "I'm ready to unify", Wilder said. "I just had to get my reins back".
"It's not about how big your muscles are - it's about the heart".
"The mind is powerful - speak it, believe it, receive it".
Wilder's belief was incredible.
Deontay Wilder has vowed to prove that he is the best heavyweight boxer, after he weighed in nearly two stone lighter than Luis Ortiz for his WBC title defence in Brooklyn on Sunday morning.
Wilder [previously 39-0, 38KOs] recovered from a seventh round in which he himself might have been stopped to destroy Ortiz [previously 28-0, 24KOs] in the 10th round of a fight which ebbed and flowed, but eventually took the roof off Barclays Center. Ortiz showed how open Wilder is at times, which a big puncher can capitalise on.
With Anthony Joshua set to take on Joseph Parker in a unification bout at the end of this month, Wilder would be the ideal opponent for the victor.
"A true champion always finds a way to come back, that's what I did tonight".
Deontay Wilder exchanges punches with Luis Ortiz during their WBC world heavyweight title fight in NY. In a lot of people's eyes, they will both be seeing their first real test when they step into the ring against each other on Saturday night.
This fight alone is interesting but it takes on even greater significance when you consider the big picture.
"Joshua is Annabelle and he is pumping that milk out of there, as much as he can, trying to make that money from his man until the time comes".
But the judges revealed they had Wilder ahead 85-84 at the end of the ninth round. It would also be foolish and I'm beginning to think that nice-guy Wilder is a boxing fool.
Wilder wants to punish Ortiz for using Performance Enhancing Drugs, and Ortiz wants to teach Wilder to respect his name after all of the trash talk thrown his way. This solidifies my position at the top of the foodchain.
"This was a signature win against a Luis Ortiz who everyone in the division has ducked".
"I am ready right now". We all knew Wilder had the power to hurt just about any heavyweight out there, but what we didn't know is how Deontay could leverage his physical gifts during the kind of extreme adversity he faced at several points in the bout.
