James Ivory, screenwriter and co-producer of the drama Call Me by Your Name, on Monday created history as he became the oldest Oscar victor.

"My rule number one for a screenwriter who adapts a novel is first to thank the author: André Aciman, who wrote the story about first love and is here tonight", Ivory said in his acceptance speech. "You have the feeling at the end of the film that this is his first love, but there will be many other loves in his life".

Winner Ivory beat out fellow nominees Logan, Molly's Game and Mudbound in addition to the Disaster Artist to win. "90 years for anything that you would do is extraordinary, but to be here having won the Oscar at that age just seems like a hiccup in nature, possibly, something like that, but it feels great".

Best Actress victor Frances McDormand gave Kim a shoutout during her acceptance speech Sunday night.

"We've all gone through first love, I hope, and come out the other side mostly intact", Mr Ivory told the audience at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre. In 1961, Ivory formed a production company with Ismail Merchant, who was also his romantic partner for over 40 years until Merchant died in 2005.

Actor Timothée Chalamet lost the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role to Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour.

"I worked on that screenplay for about nine months, and in that time they were able to get the money to produce the film".

Call Me By Your Name also won the BAFTA for Best Adapted screenplay earlier this year.
